Ritchie works from her studio in the beautiful Briggait building in Glasgow. Most of the time you can find her huddled over her workbench, working on custom jewellery in recycled precious metals and stones. She has created everything from classic gold wedding bands and diamond engagement rings to silver grasshopper brooches. Ailsa’s work is all about the small details, whether it’s picking up on the subtle surface of a rock and applying it to a wedding ring, adding leaf details to cradle a stone or decorating a pendant with the spots from a ladybug. Ailsa’s fascination with insects and their habitats started at a young age and continues to influence her work. Her designs always start on paper, and she explores different methods of turning her loose drawing style into tactile jewellery pieces; such as etching, wax carving and combining traditional powder enamels alongside industrial enamel techniques to enable her to draw directly onto the metal. The result is jewellery bursting with texture and flowing lines. Ailsa also teaches jewellery making classes at Central Scotland School of Jewellery in Dunblane. Sometimes a straight band doesn’t always sit well next to a ring like this, but I can help. I use wax carving to create custom shaped bands to fit snugly around your existing ring. Before carving I can provide you with sketches for various options before carving up your wax samples. A fitted band might be straight with a notch to slot your ring into, a gentle curved band or a pointed wishbone. Designing The designing stage almost always starts with sketches. These first sketches normally include few different options before narrowing them down to your perfect piece. I do these as digital drawings so it’s easy to quickly alter the composition etc if you want to see more options. At this stage I’ll also provide you with a quote. Once you are happy with the sketched designs I’ll move on to physical samples. I’ll require a small deposit at this stage. The way I approach designing your piece will vary depending on the style of jewellery being made. This stage normally takes around 2-4 weeks although it can be the most variable time-wise and can take longer. Source your stones I have a small number of trusted stone suppliers I contact to find the perfect stone for your design.
